On 7 September 2020, the Sarawak Skills Development Centre (Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Sarawak) launched the Smart Classroom Initiative – an important part of its five-year blueprint to transform the teaching and learning ecosystem across its campuses and learning centres in Sarawak.

Held at the Sarawak Skills’ Headquarters, Tabuan Jaya, Kuching, the Smart Classroom Initiative was launched by Yang Berbahagia Dato Hajjah Maznah binti Dasmi, Secretary of the Sarawak Skills Management Council. In her address, she commended the Management and the Sarawak Skills Industry Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) Project Team for embarking on this noble initiative to integrate Industry Revolution 4.0 technologies into the classroom. In addition to fostering a student-centred and collaborative teaching and learning environment, the integration of technologies would facilitate Sarawak Skills’ strategic maintenance initiatives, especially in reducing equipment downtime and managing costs effectively.

In his speech, Mr. Hallman bin Haji Sabri, Sarawak Skills’ Executive Director highlighted, “With the Digital Economy and Industry Revolution 4.0 on our doorstep, we have adopted a multipronged approach to talent development. In this respect, we have incorporated the technological pillars of Industry 4.0 in our curricula. The launch of the Smart Classroom Initiative is part and parcel of a series of ongoing projects to upgrade our teaching and learning facilities in line with the requirements of Industry Revolution 4.0. This will facilitate our ongoing effort to develop an agile workforce. Indeed, these developments are in line with the State Government’s post COVID-19 exit economic strategy up to 2030.”

Mr. Hallman added, “As a stakeholder in the transformation of Sarawak’s economic and digital landscape, Sarawak Skills will remain steadfast in its quest to offer industry-driven and future-oriented educational and training courses and programmes, and be a flag-bearer in the noble cause of Sustainable Human Capital Development. We are also working closely with the industries on the integration of Industry Revolution 4.0 technologies into existing equipment (Legacy Equipment). This will go a long way to boost productivity and manage costs.”

Also present at the launch were members of the Sarawak Skills management team.
