At the International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS), students of the Diploma in Civil Engineering programme, as budding engineers, are quick to appreciate the importance of the civil engineering profession in facilitating the transformation of Sarawak into a high-income and developed state.
As highlighted by Mr. Ting Kung Chuang, Head of the i-CATS School of Engineering, “The overarching theme of the School of Engineering centres on enhancing quality of life through a sustainable approach to engineering practice and design.” He added, “In Sarawak, it is forecasted that government-led initiatives such as the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) and the Sarawak Socio-Economic Transformation Plan (SETP) will generate a host of career opportunities for engineering graduates. With numerous infrastructure and road-building projects within Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole, engineers play a very important role in state and nation building.”
Mr. Ting also commented that, “The Diploma in Civil Engineering programme prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities within Malaysia and abroad. Our graduates can look forward to careers across the commercial and industrial sectors in Construction Management, Structural Engineering, Traffic Engineering, etc. They can apply for a wide variety of positions such as Assistant Engineer, Supervisor, Maintenance & Service Technician, and Technical Assistant. Prior to the completion of the programme, students are required to undergo a 4-month internship. This ensures that the students have the opportunity to learn directly from the industry and gain real-world work experience. On completion of their studies, graduates may also further their studies in a range of degree programmes.”
Madam Zetty Baiduri binti Hossen, Head of the i-CATS Diploma in Civil Engineering programme added, “During the two-and-a-half-year programme, students will take industry-relevant subjects such as Building Construction Technology, Engineering Drawing, Engineering Survey, Environmental Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Structural Concrete Design, Structural Steel Design, and Traffic & Highway Engineering. They will also develop an arsenal of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, and hone their critical thinking, decision-making and team building skills.” She also emphasized that, “To foster the development of technical and soft skills, civil engineering students are encouraged to participate in the annual Build and Break Competition organized by the i-CATS Civil Engineering Club. In a nutshell, each team has to build a bridge with the raw materials provided. An important criterion is the maximum load that each bridge is able to support.”
At i-CATS, a major point of pride is the fast-growing number of alumni, with their diverse contributions across the length and breadth of industry. For example, Noorahim bin Nordin (Diploma in Civil Engineering: Class of 2015) is currently an Assistant Engineer at Kenbest Sdn. Bhd., a leading property developer in Kuching. He highlighted, “In my capacity as an Assistant Engineer, Project Management is an important part of my duties and responsibilities. In this respect, I have the opportunity to work with colleagues from different departments to facilitate the smooth running of our projects.” He also shared, “To facilitate one’s progress in the world of work, it is important to have a productive mindset and be willing to update one’s knowledge and skill set.”
Another i-CATS graduate (Diploma in Civil Engineering: Class of 2016) Cerries Chin Yee Jie is pursuing degree-level studies in Civil Engineering at University College of Technology Sarawak. True to her motto “Life is full of adventures”, Cerries shared, “As one progresses along life’s voyage, it is important to set academic and life goals. This will enable one to formulate appropriate strategies to achieve these goals.”
Indeed, i-CATS alumni are making their mark, contributing positively to the progress and vibrancy of the broad canvas of industry. Enrolment to the Diploma in Civil Engineering programme is now ongoing until 10 April 2017. Students who have completed SPM/SPMV with a minimum of three credits including Mathematics and one science/technical subject and a pass in English are eligible to enter the i-CATS Diploma in Civil Engineering programme. Applications will also be considered for those who have completed an MQA Accredited Certificate in Engineering/Technology programme (MQF Level 3) with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.0.
